But even the wish to make others happy can become excessive if you lose yourself in the desire to help, please, or gratify them.

It is important to notice whether other people are angry or unhappy with some aspect of their interaction with you.

However, that sensitivity should not turn into an expectation that others are always going to be angry with you or out to get you.

Maturation of the Old Mammalian Brain: The Limbic Emotional Area

We experience the processes in the limbic system as feelings, moods, and a sense of meaning and expectations about interactions with others. All these experiences, as well as the ability to have feelings at all, depend on what the limbic emotional area has learned in interactions with our parents and later, with other people. The area begins to develop about three months after birth and is fully active around the age of eight to ten months. During this period, infants learn how to coordinate feelings and expectations with the adults around them, and they continue to use and develop this capacity for attunement for the rest of their lives. Once again we divide this attunement process into three maturation stages:

First step: Around the age of three months, a neural connection develops between the infant’s face and vagus nerve, which is involved in regulating our inner organs and in producing our gut feeling. If the parent’s face also expresses nuanced emotions that are related to his or her gut feeling, parent and child can now expand their autonomic synchronization and attune on a limbic-emotional level.
